Egg Hatching & When to Remove the Male Betta

by admin0 on November 16, 2009

Eggs hatch

The fry will hatch 1.5 to 2 days after spawning. After hatching the tiny fry can’t do much more than wiggle, and they frequently wiggle their way out of the bubble nest. The male has a busy job for the next few days putting the fry back in the bubble nest and maintaining the nest. It’s a 24 hour job, and if the male misses any of the fallen fry, they may not survive.

Its best not to try to do the male betta’s job for him. Even if you lose a few of the newly born fry, trying to save them will probably disrupt the tank and the nest, and really upset your male betta. Its better to just leave them alone.

When to remove the male

Two days after hatching the fry have figured out a bit of how to swim. They will leave the bubble nest and spread out over the tank lying just under the water surface. The male, having not eaten in all this time, may start eating some of the fry. This doesn’t always happen, but as before, keep a close eye on the breeding tank to make sure all is well. Many breeders will remove the male at this point, as he’s done his job and can’t really help the fry any more.

Move the male to a nice warm, clean tank with no other fish in it. Feed him top-quality food and be good to him for at least a week as he recovers from raising his fry.

I hope you can help me. This is my thrid try at breeding bettas and I have not been successful at it. The water is never clear what can I do. Do I feed the male and female in the tank?
I saw them both under the nest and he was puting the eggs in the nest and well they where doing their dance. I waited for a while like 2 hours or so when I came back the female was in the other side oposit from the nest behind the plant, the male was under the nest at that point I took the female out but as I put her in the other tank I saw that she had a full belly with some strips. Any way I still put her in another tank, this happened Tuesday it is now Thursday but I don’t see any babies the male is still under the nest but I don’t see any fry, do I wait any longer? How can I clean out the tank so that I can see better? Please help me I really want to make this work
I look forward to your answer

This page has been very helpful bto me. My kids got a pair of betta fish and they seem to of gotten along really good they already have eggs. What I can’t seem to find an answer for is once the eggs have hatched can they have more? Should we put them in seperate tanks and not let them be together again? I don’t want them to feel alone either. Or does it even make a difference?

I am having my first batch of betta every. They are 2 days after hatch now, male still looking after them. I have been doing 25% water changes daily since yesterday and make sure I siphon out the debris on the bottom of the tank, and making sure I am not sucking out the babies.

For water changes I have kept a bucket (20 liter) of tap water and sponge filter running in it.

For food for the babies, 2-3 fish pellets, frozen blood worms (some 10-20 bits) , and 10-20 drops of water in a small container mashed together and just pour it in the breeding tank after siphoning out 25% of water and before adding the top-up, so that the mixture spreads out evenly. You can also add green water (algae water) as food for the babies. I had a fry which escaped through the siphon the first day, which I have put in a glass full of green water and is doing great for the second day…..

The male is doing its good job for the second day (48th hour) after hatching, 2 days before hatching, and some 4 days with his mate. Cute guy..

One more thing, the female was also collecting the eggs and putting back fallen eggs into the nest, good understanding between them maybe. I did not want to take risk and go with the folks, so had to remove the female.

Any comments plz feel free….

Any questions plz feel free….

hi theis is the second time i have bred my betta n both times after a couple days the eggs and the nest has disappeared and there are no sign of the babies what does this mean?

Now that I have removed the male, there is no one to take care of the fry in. The bottom of the tank is very dirty, I have fed them with dry blood worms, pellets, and egg yolk. Some fry are lying on the debris.

I am a bit worried the debris might become a problem to them, so I am planning to transfer the fry to a different tank in which I have kept a sponge filter running for 2-3 days. Is this okay to do? help me out!!!!!!!

My bettas spawned for a few hours and they laid eggs. It has been 4 days now but I don’t see any babies. I see some eggs falling sometimes, but not as much as they used to. I’m not sure if the eggs died or the babies too small and I can’t see them. My male betta didn’t eat since then and I’m very concerned.
